The Fiberglass Pool Opening Checklist: Spring Startup Done Right
Opening a fiberglass pool is a sequence, not a chore list, and one step matters more than all the others combined. Before the water goes up and the pump goes on, you get one clear look at your shell. That look is your annual inspection. Don't waste it.
To open a fiberglass pool for spring: pump off and clean the cover before removing it, inspect the exposed shell for winter damage before you raise the water, reconnect and prime the equipment, top up to mid-skimmer, balance the chemistry in order, alkalinity, then pH, then calcium and stabilizer, then shock and run the filter until the water clears. The whole job takes a weekend. The inspection step takes twenty minutes and is worth more than the rest put together.
Step 1: Pump Off, Clean, and Remove the Cover
Winter covers collect a season of rainwater, leaves, and rot. If you drag the cover off first, all of it lands in your pool and your opening starts with a swamp. Do it in order: pump the standing water off the top with a cover pump, skim or blow off the solid debris, then fold the cover back in sections so nothing spills over the edge.
Lay the cover out, hose it down, let it dry completely, and store it off the ground, a dry, folded cover lasts years longer and doesn't greet you with mildew next November. While it dries, you have an open, low-water pool in daylight. That's your cue for the step most owners skip.
Step 2: Walk the Shell Before You Fill, This Is the Inspection
Right now, with the water low and the surface visible, is the single best look you will get at your pool all year. Winter is when freeze-thaw stress, ground movement, and months of untended water do their damage, and spring opening is the moment that damage is standing in plain sight. Once the pool is full and shimmering, small problems disappear until they're big ones.
Walk the entire waterline and everything you can see below it, in good light, and check off each symptom:
- Spider cracks. Fine, web-like lines in the gel coat, especially around steps, corners, and fittings. Some are cosmetic; clusters or long runs can signal stress underneath. Here's how to read them.
- Blisters. Raised bumps in the surface, from pinhead to quarter-sized. They mean water has gotten behind the gel coat, and they don't heal, they spread.
- Freeze damage. New cracks near the waterline, around skimmers and returns, or where ice sat against the shell over winter. This is what freeze damage looks like, and it's most common after a winter with a closing mistake.
- Chalking and fading. Wipe a dry palm on the wall above the waterline. Powdery residue means the surface is oxidizing.
- New stains or rough patches. Note where they are, location is diagnostic.
Photograph anything you find, close up and in context. Even if it turns out to be nothing, you've documented your baseline, and if it's something, spring photos get you a diagnosis and a repair plan before swim season instead of during it.

Step 3: Reconnect and Prime the Equipment
Now bring the mechanical side back to life, in order:
- Remove winterizing plugs from the returns and skimmer, and pull the ice compensator or Gizzmo from the skimmer body.
- Reinstall the drain plugs in the pump, filter, and heater. Check every o-ring and lubricate with pool-grade lube, dry, cracked o-rings are the number-one source of spring air leaks.
- Reconnect any unions you opened at closing, hand-tight plus a nudge.
- Fill the pump basket with water to prime, open the valves, and start the pump. It should catch prime within a minute or two; if it won't, you're sucking air somewhere, recheck plugs, unions, and the pump lid o-ring.
- Watch the whole equipment pad run for ten minutes. Drips at fittings now become failures in July.
Expect the pressure gauge to read a little differently than you remember and the pump to sound rough for the first minute while air purges. What you should not expect: persistent bubbles from the returns, a pump that loses prime, or water on the pad. Those are open items, not quirks.
Step 4: Top Up the Water
Raise the level to the middle of the skimmer opening with a garden hose. On a fiberglass pool, never be tempted to "start fresh" by draining what's left, an empty fiberglass shell can shift or bulge without the water weight holding it in place. Top up; don't drain. If the level dropped dramatically over winter, well below where you closed it, note it. Covers hide leaks all winter, and a big unexplained drop is worth a bucket test once the pool is running.
Step 5: Balance the Chemistry, In the Right Order
Chemistry order matters because each parameter affects the next. Test first, take a sample to the pool store or use a good kit, then adjust in this sequence:
- Total alkalinity first (aim 80-120 ppm). Alkalinity is the buffer; get it right and pH stops swinging.
- pH second (7.2-7.6). Fiberglass gel coat is happiest in this band, chronically low pH etches and dulls the surface.
- Calcium hardness third (roughly 220-320 ppm for fiberglass). Too low and aggressive water hunts for minerals; too high and you get scale.
- Stabilizer (CYA) fourth (30-50 ppm) so your chlorine survives sunlight.
- Sanitizer last. Bring chlorine into range only after the rest is balanced.

Step 6: Shock, Circulate, and Clear
With the balance set, shock the pool to burn off the winter's organic load, follow the product's dose for your volume, and add it at dusk so the sun doesn't eat it. Then let the filter do its job: run it continuously until the water is clear, typically 24-72 hours depending on how the pool wintered, brushing the walls and floor daily so the filter can grab what's settled. Vacuum the last of the debris, backwash or clean the filter, and drop to your normal run schedule once you can see a coin on the deep-end floor.

Here's the mindset shift that separates pools that last from pools that surprise their owners: opening isn't just startup, it's the one scheduled moment each year when your shell gets examined. Skip the walk-through and a spider crack gets twelve more months to grow, a blister field gets a whole swim season to spread, and next spring's opening finds a bigger bill. When should I open my fiberglass pool in spring?
When daytime water temperature is heading past about 60°F, earlier is better than later, because algae wakes up in warming water under a cover. In most of our 16 states that means March through early May. Opening early also gets your shell inspection done with time to fix anything before swim season.
Should I drain my fiberglass pool to clean it at opening?
No. A fiberglass shell relies on the weight of the water to stay seated against the backfill, draining it without proper bracing risks shifting or bulging the shell. Clean it full: brush, vacuum, shock, and filter. If the pool ever does need to be emptied, that's a controlled professional procedure.
What order do I balance pool chemistry at opening?
