Water Chemistry for Fiberglass Pools: The Numbers That Matter
Your gel coat lives or dies by four numbers. Here are the target ranges that protect a fiberglass surface, why calcium matters more than most owners realize, and how bad chemistry shows up as visible damage.
For a fiberglass pool, keep pH at 7.2-7.6, total alkalinity at 80-120 ppm, calcium hardness around 200-300 ppm, and free chlorine at 1-3 ppm. Hold those four ranges and your water protects the gel coat instead of slowly eating it.
Fiberglass Pool Water Chemistry: Target Ranges
These are standard industry targets. Fiberglass is more forgiving than plaster, the surface doesn't fight your pH the way curing concrete does, but it is not indestructible. Water always wants to be in balance, and if you don't give it what it needs from a bottle, it will take it from your surface.

pH: The Number That Ages Your Surface
pH measures how acidic or basic your water is, and gel coat cares about it more than any other number. Water below 7.2 is aggressive, over months it dulls the gloss, accelerates oxidation, and leaves the surface more porous and stain-prone. Water above 7.8 pushes minerals out of solution as scale and makes chlorine sluggish.
The sneaky culprit: trichlor chlorine tablets are strongly acidic. A tab floater quietly drags pH down all season. If you use tabs, test pH twice a week and expect to add pH increaser regularly. It's not a flaw in your pool, it's just how tabs work.
Calcium Hardness: The Most Misunderstood Number on Fiberglass
Plenty of owners hear "fiberglass has no plaster, so calcium doesn't matter." That's half right and fully wrong in practice. Water chemistry follows saturation: water that's undersaturated with calcium is "hungry" and pulls minerals from whatever it contacts, gel coat, metal fittings, grout in surrounding hardscape. Over time, low-calcium water contributes to etching and dulling of the gel coat surface.
Overshoot the other way and calcium comes out of solution as scale: white, crusty deposits at the waterline and rough patches on steps that feel like sandpaper. On a surface whose whole job is being glassy-smooth, scale is both ugly and abrasive. Keep calcium hardness roughly in the 200-300 ppm range and test monthly, it only moves when you add water or chemicals.
Chlorine and Stabilizer: Enough, Not Extra
Free chlorine at 1-3 ppm keeps a fiberglass pool sanitary, and thanks to the non-porous surface, fiberglass usually holds that range easily. Resist the "more is better" instinct: chronically running chlorine high, or shocking constantly, accelerates fading and oxidation of the gel coat.
Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) at 30-50 ppm shields chlorine from sunlight. Because trichlor tabs add CYA with every tab, levels creep up over seasons. When CYA climbs far past target, chlorine reads fine on a strip but sanitizes poorly, and the traditional fix, draining and diluting, is exactly the operation a fiberglass owner should never do without professional help.
Salt Systems on Fiberglass Pools
Good news: fiberglass and saltwater chlorination get along well. There's no plaster for salt to attack and no liner seams to stress, and many owners love the softer-feeling water. Two cautions:
- Salt cells push pH up. The chlorine generation process raises pH, so salt pool owners should test pH weekly and expect to add acid routinely. An unwatched salt pool often sits at 8.0+, scaling the surface and waterline.
- Salt is unforgiving of existing damage. If the gel coat is already worn, cracked, or blistered, saltwater reaches the laminate and any exposed metal faster. Get the surface sound before converting, a professional inspection is cheap insurance.
How Bad Chemistry Shows Up as Symptoms
