Why Is My Fiberglass Pool Fading Unevenly? Reading the Patterns
Even fading is aging. Patchy fading is evidence. Where your pool lost its color, steps, waterline, one wall, random blotches, tells a specialist exactly what attacked the surface and how deep the damage runs. Here's how to read your own pool.
A fiberglass pool fades unevenly because the attack isn't even: UV dose, chemical exposure, and gel coat thickness all vary across the shell. Pattern 1: Steps and Tanning Ledges Fade First
Almost every fiberglass pool loses color in the same place first: the entry steps and tanning ledge. Two reasons, both physics.
Shallow water magnifies UV. Water absorbs ultraviolet light, so the deeper the surface sits, the more protection it gets. A step under eight inches of water takes a dramatically heavier UV dose than the floor under seven feet, day after day, all season. The result is bleaching that starts on the horizontal surfaces closest to the sky and works down.
Steps catch the chemical abuse too. Chlorine tablets tossed in the shallow end settle on steps and dissolve there, printing pale rings. Floaters park in corners above ledges. Swimmers' sunscreen collects in the shallow zone. Pattern 2: The Waterline Band
A pale, dull, or chalky stripe running around the pool at water level is the second classic. The waterline is the hardest-working inch of your pool: it's where water, air, and sunlight all meet. Above it, splash evaporates and leaves chemicals concentrated on a hot, dry surface. UV hits it directly and again reflected off the water. Every chemical you add passes through this zone at full strength before it dilutes.
The result is a band where the gel coat oxidizes and bleaches years ahead of the submerged surface. Run a dry palm along it, if you pick up white powder, the band isn't just faded, it's chalking, which means the resin itself is breaking down, not just the pigment.

Pattern 3: One Wall Faded, the Other Fine
Stand at your pool at midday and notice which wall the sun is actually hitting. Shade structures, trees, and the house itself carve that exposure map further. Sun-bias fading is the easiest pattern to confirm: it lines up with the sky, not with fittings or repairs. Pattern 4: Blotchy, Random Patches
This is the pattern that isn't about sun or chemistry at all, it's about the surface itself being uneven. When fade shows up as irregular blotches with no relationship to depth, sun, or the waterline, the usual suspects are:
- Previous repairs. Patch jobs, a smear of gel paste here, a painted touch-up there, age differently than the factory surface around them. The patch and the original fade at different rates, and a repair that was invisible at year one becomes a pale island by year five.
- Thin factory gel coat. Gel coat is sprayed at the factory, and spray thickness varies. Where the layer went on thin, the pigment supply is smaller and the color exhausts sooner, blotches that seem random are often a map of the original spray pass.
- A past paint job. If a previous owner painted the pool, blotchy fading in 2-4 years is the paint doing what epoxy paint does: chalking and letting go unevenly. Wipe test comes back heavy, and edges of the blotches sometimes show flaking.
